Music

Music is a powerful healing tool for me.  I’ve found that music has a direct connection to my emotions.  Songs make me think, touch my heart, bring back memories, powerful memories, good and bad – and that helps the healing process.  It also brings me comfort to know that others share these feelings, and that they thought enough of these legitimate emotions to turn them in to poetry and art.  And finally, music provides a convenient way to share these emotions.

So I share these songs that strike me, for whatever reason, in my grieving and recovery process…

“Keep Me in Your Heart for a While” by Warren Zevon

Get out the Kleenex for this one…the last song from one of my favorite artists…

“Duck and Cover” by Glen Philips

This song, with its simple wisdom, just brings so much home…

Someone’s in the back yard, banging on the door
Daddy’s gone away, he’s coming back no more
His baby’s curled up on a stranger’s floor
Mama’s thinking family dinners weren’t too much to ask for

Everybody here’s got a story to tell
Everybody’s been through their own hell
There’s nothing too special about getting hurt
Getting over it, that takes the work

Cause one way or another, we’ll all need each other
Nothing’s gonna turn out the way you thought it would
But friends and lovers, don’t you duck and cover
Cause everything comes out the way it should

Blessed are the hungry, blessed are the weak
Blessed are the humble, blessed are the meek
Blessed are the ones on the other side
Blessed are we for just being alive

One day I stopped wanting anything at all
The heavens opened up like a waterfall
No use in worrying about when it ends
Just for now be thankful for what I get

Cause one way or another, a man’s gonna suffer
It makes no difference the way you wanted it
But friends and lovers, don’t you duck and cover
Cause everything comes out the way it should in the end

Seems like life is a palindrome
You cry when you die, you cry when you’re born
In between it’s all about the ups and downs
Add ’em all together, they cancel each other out

Cause one way or another
One way or another
You won’t get what you wanted
You’ll get enough, for sure
One way or another
Winter pays for the summer
Won’t get what you wanted
What you got’ll be good

Someone’s in the back yard, banging on the door
Daddy’s gone away, he’s coming back no more
His baby’s curled up on a stranger’s floor
Mama’s thinking happy endings weren’t too much to ask for

“The Gift of Seeing Through” by Bill Deasy

Illusions, plentiful as faces in the crowd

Shining up like fool’s gold
From a mountain made of sand
Illusions, draining all my energy
Waiting like an enemy

In the darkest hour of my longest night
When I can’t find the words to say
Reach for a moonbeam and cling with all my might
Crawl to my bedside and I pray for

The gift of seeing through
The gift of seeing through
The gift of seeing through

Sometimes, too many times, I take the dead-end road
That leads me back to nowhere fast
With no place to go
Sometimes I can’t see the larger things
For the fear in front of me

In the darkest hour of my longest night
When I can’t find the words to say
Reach for a moonbeam and cling with all my might
Crawl to my bedside and I pray for

The gift of seeing through
The gift of seeing through
The gift of seeing through

Through the broken sky
A ray of sunlight fell
With a whispered cry
I stumbled from my cell
Well you live and die
and then you start the whole thing over
An honest prayer
Is like a midnight train
It’s gonna take you there
through the wind and rain
When you’re cold and scared
and you just can’t make it over…

The gift of seeing through
The gift of seeing through
The gift of seeing through

“Life Is Beautiful” by Amy Correia

Deb’s theme song has to be Life Is Beautiful by Amy Correia – that’s how she lived every day.  Here are the lyrics, and a link to the video…

Innocent I was born a queen
Woke to life I thought it was a dream
I was lying in the gutter when a hand unseen
Poured down the sun on New York City
I went sailing through the streets
On a sea of faces
I was just another person
That time erases
It was All Soul’s Day and I was not afraid
I felt I had a reason to live that day
And it seemed to me that something good
Is coming if you think it could
And I don’t know when
And I don’t know how
But I put my head into the clouds
And it’s beautiful
It’s beautiful
It’s beautiful
Life is

Now I’m flying over bridges
And the sun’s in my eyes
Skyscrapers shining and trains roll by
I thought I saw myself among the passersby
We’re walking on the water
Walking on the light
And it seemed to me that something good
Is coming if you think it could
And I don’t know when
And I don’t know how
But I put my head into the clouds
And it’s beautiful
It’s beautiful

It’s beautiful
Life is

“For a Dancer” by Jackson Brown

Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I don’t remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you’d always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you’re nowhere to be found

I don’t know what happens when people die
Can’t seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It’s like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
That I can’t sing
I can’t help listening
And I can’t help feeling stupid standing ’round
Crying as they ease you down
‘Cause I know that you’d rather we were dancing
Dancing our sorrow away
(Right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(There’s nothing you can do about it anyway)

Just do the steps that you’ve been shown
By everyone you’ve ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another’s steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you’ll do alone

Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don’t let the uncertainty turn you around
(The world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound

“I’m Right Here My Love” by Scott Miller

Beautiful song touching on a topic that you’ve gotta have a lot of guts to write about.  But Scott and Patty’s voices, earthy gravel and angelic croon, carry the emotions of Scott’s powerful words all too true…

Can you hear me crying?
I’m right here, my love
The unknown is frightening
I’m right here, my love
Worlds far apart can’t separate us
And I can hear you crying
I’m right here, my love

Can you taste my kiss?
I’m right here, my love
I wish life was endless
I’m right here, my love
But living costs something and pay it we must
But I will keep your kiss
I’m right here, my love

Can you feel me tremble?
I’m right here, my love
Does it feel like you remember?
I’m right here my love
The future’s assured in the pulse of our blood
I can feel you tremble
I’m right here, my love

Can you sit closer?
I’m right here, my love
Now watch me pass over
I’m right here, my love
We did not give in and we did not give up
I’ll watch you cross over
I’m right here, my love

Can you hear me crying?
I’m right here, my love
Thunder and lightning
I’m right here, my love
Worlds far apart can’t separate us
And I can hear you crying

I’m right here, my love
